ABSTRACT

Simultaneously with this work, the FHWA was developing and evaluating an electric resistance heating blanket system for another type of bridge heating application. These blankets showed potential for use in the surface impregnation process and were used for a full-scale bridge treatment in the State of Maine. The blankets provided a tight cover over the monomer saturated sand and greatly reduced monomer evaporation during the impregnation and polymerization cycles. The resulting excess monomer bonded the sand to the concrete surface. Removal of this bonded sand was extremely difficult and costly.
