ABSTRACT

The treatment of structures with alkyl alkoxysilane (silane) to combat chloride ingress is advocated by the Department of Transport for repair (1), new construction and for bridges less than 6 years old (2, 3). The Scottish Development Department (which is the Scottish equivalent of the Department of Transport) has recently commissioned a series of silane treatment trials to establish the effectiveness of the silane in combating reinforcement corrosion and in enhancing concrete durability.
