ABSTRACT

In the previous two chapters, the behaviour of a single degree of freedom (SDOF) system was considered. A typical example was a single-storey building with the mass concentrated at the roof level and capable of only a sway displacement as shown in Fig. 1.2b. In practice, systems with multiple degree of freedom (MDOF) such as the three-storey 'shear' building shown in Fig. 3.1 are quite common.
