ABSTRACT

An EMAT probe i s b a s i c a l l y composed of a magnet which induces into the material a s t a t i c magnetic f i e l d , and a c o i l ran by a s u i t a b l e RF current pulse i n order to produce i n the surface region of the material an eddy current f i e l d . The in t e r a c t i o n between eddy current and s t a t i c magnetic f i e l d generates a Lorentz force f i e l d which e x c i t e s an u l t r a s o n i c wave. The phenomenon i s r e v e r s i b l e and therefore the same probe or type of device can be used as rece i v e r .
