ABSTRACT

SUMMARY This paper discusses the performance o f beam-column j o i n t s i n m u l t i s t o r e y c o n s t r u c t i o n , d i s t i n g u i s h i n g between behaviour assumed i n c o n v e n t i o n a l "simple" and " r i g i d " design models and t r u e response. I t begins by proposing d e f i n i t i o n s f o r the main terms, i . e . connection, j o i n t , node, nodal zone, moment and r o t a t i o n . I t then sets out f a c t o r s which must be considered b e f o r e conducting t e s t s t o determine e x p e r i m e n t a l l y r e p r e s e n t a t i v e moment r o t a t i o n c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s , f o c u s s i n g a t t e n t i o n on the specimens, i n s t r u m e n t a t i o n , l o a d i n g , r e p o r t i n g and i n t e r p r e t a t i o n o f the r e s u l t s .
