ABSTRACT
I f o n e e x a m i n e s t h e amount o f t i m e s p e n t on e a c h p h a s e o f a
r o c k s l o p e s t a b i l i t y i n v e s t i g a t i o n , by f a r t h e g r e a t e s t
p r o p o r t i o n o f t i m e i s d e v o t e d t o t h e c o l l e c t i o n and i n t e r -
p r e t a t i o n o f g e o l o g i c a l d a t a . H o w e v e r , a s e a r c h t h r o u g h
s l o p e s t a b i l i t y l i t e r a t u r e r e v e a l s t h a t t h e number o f
p u b l i c a t i o n s d e a l i n g w i t h t h i s t o p i c i s i n s i g n i f i c a n t as
c o m p a r e d w i t h t h e o r e t i c a l p a p e r s on t h e m e c h a n i c s o f s l o p e
f a i l u r e ( i d e a l i s e d s l o p e s , o f c o u r s e ) . On f i r s t a p p e a r a n c e s
i t may be c o n c l u d e d t h a t t h e e n g i n e e r has d i s p l a y e d a
r e m a r k a b l e t e n d e n c e y t o p u t t h e p r o v e r b i a l c a r t b e f o r e t h e
h o r s e . Deeper e x a m i n a t i o n o f t h e p r o b l e m r e v e a l s t h a t t h i s
e m p h a s i s on t h e o r e t i c a l s t u d i e s has p r o b a b l y been n e c e s s a r y
i n o r d e r t h a t t h e e n g i n e e r ( a n d g e o l o g i s t ) s h o u l d be i n a
b e t t e r p o s i t i o n t o i d e n t i f y relevant g e o l o g i c a l i n f o r m a t i o n
a n d , as a c o n s e q u e n c e , be i n a p o s i t i o n t o d e a l w i t h t h i s
p h a s e o f t h e i n v e s t i g a t i o n more e f f i c i e n t l y .
