ABSTRACT
Over the past two decades several hundred concrete highway bridges have been built in Saudi Arabia as part of the development of a modern highway network. Some of these bridges have suffered prematurely from excessive cracking, deterioration, loss of serviceability and failure. Several reasons are believed to have contributed to these phenomena, among which are low quality of concrete constituents, poor construction practices, lack of control over vehicular loads and the harsh environmental factors.
