For the 90 years or so since they were introduced concrete bridges have performed well and there were few problems until the 1970s. During the 1960s the use of rock-salt was introduced for deicing. It was not until some years later than the deleterious effect of salting became apparent through the development of corrosion of the steel reinforcement bars and carbonation of the concrete.
