ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to give a reasonably detailed account of the response of the single-degree-of-freedom oscillator to simple forcing functions. Free vibrations, including the effects of damping, are considered first. Section 2.2 deals with response to a few commonly used forcing functions. We also consider here the effect of system non-linearity in the form of elasto-plastic action. The emphasis is on obtaining peak response quantities. As before, several examples are given.
