ABSTRACT

Economy The table below summarises economic data for all the countries included in this publication. The figures indicated for Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in each of the country profile sections have been shown in national currencies. For the table below these figures have been converted to US dollars using an average exchange rate for the relevant year, generally in respect of 1998. Contained within the table are some of the world's poorest countries such as Suriname and Guyana. The wealthier countries in this table are Argentina, Brazil and Mexico, which all have healthy GDP figures, in particular Brazil which has GDP figure of $775.4 billion. It is perhaps more helpful when measuring national wealth to consider the GDP per capita. Again, similar to the GDP figures before, it is Argentina which has the highest GDP per capita with Uruguay having the second highest at $6,300 per capita, almost twice as much as some of the other countries in this publication.
