ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we show clearly that measurement of the strains of diagonal tension in a flexural member cannot be made directly. Rather, they have been determined indirectly from theprincipal strains by trigonometry. There appears to beno reliable physical evidence to support the existence of diagonal tension. This chapter also gives clear evidence of the fact that diagonal tension (as suggested by the pioneers) is only an assumption. This is illustrated in Figure 2.4.
