ABSTRACT

The final chapter of this book compares and evaluates the findings of the four country case studies with a view to identifying what general lessons can be learnt from these experiences in connection with the development of national geographic information strategies. In the process reference is repeatedly made to the various conceptual standpoints regarding the nature of geographic information that were discussed in Chapter 2. The basic structure of the presentation follows that of the case studies themselves, with separate sections describing the activities of the main providers of geographic information, the institutional context within which national geographic information strategies are formulated, and the three key elements of national geographic information strategy defined in Chapter 2. The final section of the chapter draws a number of general lessons from this experience that need to be taken into account by other countries in the development of their national geographic information strategies.
