ABSTRACT
This chapter aims to provide a very broad general summary of current knowledge regarding the nature of genes and the mechanisms that control their expression, in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. This will provide a basis for an appreciation of the consequences of gene damage brought about by environmental factors in terms of mutation and gene expression (Chapter 8), as well as the mechanisms that regulate gene activity in response to specific environmental stress (Chapter 9).
