ABSTRACT
In recent times there have been a variety of attempts to estimate the number of species on earth. Although around 1.5 to 1.8 million species have already been described, it may be that the total number of species lies somewhere in the region of 5 million. This could be a conservative estimate, and as many as 30 million has been suggested.
