ABSTRACT

For the last decade, the world of Data Base Management Systems (DBMSs) has followed various technological and conceptual advances. The main challenge has been to open DBMSs to many application fields (biology, geographical information, CAD, etc.) and thus to face new types of data and processes. Within these new fields, the evolution concept is closely linked to the understanding and the description of the observed field. In this chapter, we introduce how DBMSs approach and realise the mechanisms of evolution.
