Thederivationofrelationshipsbetweentherainfalloveracatchmentarea andtheresultingflowinariverisafundamentalproblemforthehydrologist. Inmostcountries,thereareusuallyplentyofrainfallrecords,butthemore elaborateandexpensivestream-flowmeasurements,whicharewhatthe engineerneedsfortheassessmentofwaterresourcesorofdamagingflood peaks,areoftenlimitedandarerarelyavailableforaspecificriverunder investigation.Evaluatingriverdischargesfromrainfallhasstimulatedthe imaginationandingenuityofengineersformanyyears,andmorerecently hasbeentheinspirationofmanyresearchworkers.
