Amajorobjectiveinwatermanagementistoseethatexcesswaterfrom extremefloodeventsiscontrolledsoastominimizedistressandhardshipto thepopulationanddamagetotheenvironment.Boththeriverengineerand thewaterresourcesengineerneedtheskillsofthehydrologisttoevaluate floodflows.Theinformationrequirementsoftheformervaryaccordingto thenatureoftheriverchannelandtheadjoiningfloodplain;dataonfloods forthewaterresourcesengineer,apartfrommanagingreservoirstorages, areprimarilyneededforthedesignofreservoirspillways.
