ABSTRACT

In recent years, there has been an increasing move to re-introduce mass tran sit systems in the form of trams and light railways into city centres. Such sys tems provide an effective means of moving large numbers of people within an urban environment, particularly where their tracks can be separated from other forms of vehicular transport such as cars. However, trams and light rail ways lack flexibility and offer limited coverage as routes are restricted to where track has or can be laid and the infrastructure costs of opening up new routes is often high.
