ABSTRACT

Biological, Medicina l an d Environmental Inorgani c Chemistry In this chapter we have selected three topics of current interest regarding 'natural' systems where inorganic chemistry plays a significant part. One of these topics, biological inorganic chemistry or bio-inorganic chemistry, is effectively a sub-discipline on its own. The fact that nature utilizes inorganic chemistry to a large extent and with very great effect suggests that we can learn a great deal by studying the way in which nature solves a particular problem. After all, nature has had millions of years to solve problems-our own efforts, by comparison, are often dwarfed into insignificance. Often, nature's solution to a problem involves the use of a metal ion of some sort with various ligands bonded to it. This chapter covers in some detail the inorganic chemistry found and utilized in biological systems.
