Religionandscienceshouldbesymbiotic,andsometimesare,butusually thereismistrustandsuspicionbetweenthem.Itisnotclearwhythis shouldbeso,sincetheyhaveobjectivesincommon,butthroughout mostofrecordedhistory,ithasbeenso,exceptintheveryearlydays whenscientistswerepriests.Wewillnotattemptananalysisofthe probleminthischapter,butsimplyrecordthreeinstancesofpersecution ofscientistsbythereligious.Afourth,theGalileocase,willbetreatedin alaterchapter.Itwasarelativelygentlemanlyaffair.Thesethreewere not.
