ABSTRACT
Alert observers have noticed that spacecraft sampling the solar wind upstream from the Earth occasionally and briefly become engulfed in what seems to be an alien plasma [197]. Everything seems to shape up for an excursion into the magnetosheath, but events then take a turn for the unexpected. These ‘solarwind events’ display an aspect of electron acceleration that we have not come across before in these studies. They are, therefore, of great prospective value.
