ABSTRACT
We now leave the solar wind and return to the Earth’s magnetosphere. The magnetopause-the boundary layer separating solar and terrestrial plasmas-is an acceleration site with some distinctive properties which make it well worth our attention. This is a convenient opportunity to introduce, too, a new technique of analysis that considerably clarifies the nature of the transition and has potential value in other areas too.
