ABSTRACT
Itislikelythatintermsofeconomicvalue,themagneticrecordingindustry isthelargestuserofnanostructuredmaterials.Thissituationwillprobably persistintotheforeseeablefuture .Magneticmaterialsareemployedinboth theinformationstoragemediaandinthe'write'and'read'heads.Atpresent, nanostructuredmaterialsdominateinbothmediaandheads.Inthefuture,it islikelythatvirtuallyallmediaandheadswillbecomposedofnanostructured materials.Inthefollowing,theperformanceconsiderationsleadingtotheuse ofnanostructuredmaterialswillbesummarized,currentmediaandheadswill bediscussed,andsomefuturepossibledirectionswillbenoted.Thisreportis verybriefandqualitative.Acomprehensivereviewofallmaterialsandsystems aspectsofmagneticrecordingisavailable[1],asisasetofreviewarticles[2]. Recentshorterpresentationsofmaterialsissuesinmagneticrecordinghavealso beenpublished[3,4].
