ABSTRACT

Landers[1]hasinvestigatedthedistributionofchargeduetodischargesfrominsulating materials.AsimilarstudyhasbeenundertakenbyMatsuietal[2].Bothstudieshave scarmedthesurfaceofachargedinsulatorusinganinductionprobepriortoandaftera provokeddischarge.However,anychargemigrationorneuralizationbythedischargenoton thescanlinecouldnotbedetecteddirectly.Inarelatedarea,severalstudieshave investigatedthedecaycharacteristicsofthesurfacepotentialofcoronachargedpolyethylene andPETfilmsinsomedetail[3-5].Thesestudieshaveobtainedcompletetwodimensional raster-modescanningofchargeddielectricsurfacesandviacomputerlogginghave monitoredthechangeswithtimeofthesurfacechargedistribution.Inthispresentstudy,a betterunderstandingofelectrostaticdischargefrominsulatingmaterialsissought.To achievethis,itisnecessarytomapthesurfacechargedensityinatwodimensionalwayand tocalculatethetotalchargepresent.Tostudythisacomputerbasedexperimental arrangementiscurrentlybeingdeveloped.
