Abstract.Severalrelaxationprocessesshowasimilartemporalbehaviour, suggestingthatathermodynamicalapproachispossible.Linearirreversible thermodynamicsaswasdevelopedbyOnsagerandBiotallowstodefinethe variationoftheentropywhencoupledfluxesofdifferentvariablesacton thesystem.Inthispaperweapplytheaboveresultsassumingthatthe coupledvariablesarethepolarizationsinthencellsofanhomogeneous perfectdielectricwhenastepelectricfieldisapplied.Ifintheensembleof nrelaxationnormalmodesobtained,allthefrequenciesaredifferent,the electriccurrentisthesuperpositionofnexponentialtermswithamplitudes proportionaltothefrequencies.Inthatcase,forthecontinuumlimit,the resultingtemporalbehaviourisoftheformi(t)=KC1 .Manydielectrics showalawi(t)=Kt-mwithm<1,andapproaching1whentheyhavea smalllossfactor.
