Abstract.ThetermACElectrokineticsreferstotheuseofACelectricfieldsforthe movementofparticle.Dielectrophoresisisiliemovementofapolarisableparticleina non-uniformfieldduetoilieinteractionofthefieldandtheinducedipole. Electrohydrodynamicsisiliestudyoftheinteractionbetweenelectricfieldsandfluid media.Thispaperdiscussesdielectrophoresisasitappliestosub-micrometreparticles suspendedintheionicmediarequiredforbiologicalmaterial.Thepresenceofthedouble layerinsuchmediacomplicatesthedielectricpropertiesoftiieparticleandcanalsolead tofluidmotionaroundilieelectrodes.Thedynamicsofsub-micrometreparticlesarealso discussedwithparticularattentionbeingpaidtoBrownianmotionandanobservable force.Thecharacterisation,manipulationandseparationofparticlesisbrieflyreviewed anddiscussed.
