ABSTRACT

Abstract Chargedparticlesarecontinuallygeneratedinatmosphericair,andthe interactionbetweennaturalionisationandatmosphericparticlesiscomplicated. Itisofsomeclimaticimportancetoestablishifionsareimplicatedinparticle formation.Atmosphericionconcentrationshavebeeninvestigatedhereathigh temporalresolution,usingGerdienionanalysersatasitewheresynchronous meteorologicalmeasurementswerealsomade.Thebackgroundionisationrate wasalsomonitoredwithaGeigercounter,enablingionproductionfromnatural radioactivitytobedistinguishedfromothereffects.Measurementsat1Hzoffer somepromiseinestablishingtheatmosphericelectricalinfluencesinionic nucleationbursts,althoughcombinationsofothermeteorologicalfactorsare alsoknowntobesignificant.Hightimeresolutionmeteorologicalandion measurementsarethereforeclearlynecessaryinadvancingbasicunderstanding inthebehaviourofatmosphericaerosol.
