ABSTRACT

Abstract. The microstructure in a high strength steel containing impurity elements, prepared by arc melting and melt spinning, has been studied by analytical TEM, electron and ion probe methods. Melt spun alloys have a more refmed structure than arc melt alloys, leading to greater hardness. Additions of La resulted in the gettering of residual impurities. However, attack of the crucible during melt spinning caused the unexpected formation of potentially harmful large carbo-borides.
