ABSTRACT

An electrodeless compact fluorescent lamp (ECFL) operated at RF frequency of 2.65 MHz has been used for several years to replace R-type incandescent lamps [1]. Unfortunately, this ECFL has relatively low light output (1100 Lm) and does not fit many fixtures due to its size (130 mm x 80 mm) that is larger than the size of a regular incandescent lamp (120 mm x 60 mm). In this paper we present design and characteristics of a long life ECFL which is of the same size as an incandescent lamp and delivers 1500 lumens while operating at lower frequencies (80 — 400 kHz vs 2.65 MHz of the former one) with its inherent lower cost and higher driver efficiency (>90% vs <85% of the former one).
