ABSTRACT
A Nicolet Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometer was used in this investigation. The optical coupling system was designed to provide sub-mm spatial resolution. A custom MH-HID lamp was operated with a 150 W square wave ballast. The optical quality fused silica arc tube of this lamp has an outer diameter of 8 mm, an inner diameter of 6 mm, and a length of 16 mm. The lamp contains Hg (3.5 mg) plus 0.47 mg of Dy13 and NaI in 30/70% molar ratio and 50 mbar of Ar to aid starting.
