ABSTRACT

The analyses described in Chapter 4 are limited to ideal pressuremeter tests in ground which conforms to the model chosen. The ideal pressuremeter test, in which the probe is installed without disturbing the surrounding ground, is very nearly satisfied by the SBP test and, therefore, these tests are often interpreted directly using theories given in Chapter 4. Preboring for a PBP test inevitably causes disturbance. Semi-empirical methods are often used to interpret these tests though it is possible in some cases to apply theories of cavity expansion. The installation of a PIP is similar to an expanding cavity and the interpretation of a PIP test can be based either on theory or on correlations. This chapter deals with the factors that affect the interpretation of a pressuremeter test.
