ABSTRACT

One thing that can strike dread in the heart of a dedicated computer user is the threat of viruses. The very word, which conjures up images of human suffering, is enough to cause anxiety. A computer virus is actually a computer program, but one whose purpose is malicious rather than benign or beneficial. Most often a computer virus is a small program that attaches itself to programs already residing in and essential to a computer’s hard drive. Viruses usually attach executable files that operate various computer functions, often going after files in the boot sector (files that are called upon to start up the computer).
