ABSTRACT

Begin a conversation about computer visualization and most people will think in terms of the HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). HAL, as the computer was called for short, controlled all aspects of the spaceship’s operating functions, from navigation to life support. HAL also conversed with the ship’s inhabitants and could respond verbally. The most interesting aspect of HAL was, of course, “his” ability to see; in one instance Hal asked Dave (spaceship operator played by Keir Dullea) to show him the sketch pad Dave was drawing in and commented on the drawings.
