ABSTRACT

The mention of spy technology used to bring to mind movie thrillers such as the James Bond flicks, or clandestine operations by governmental agencies such as the CIA or KGB. It was the stuff of exotic locations, spies and spooks, and harrowing adventures. Today spy technology is finding its way into many homes and businesses. Internet Web sites sell spy gear such as hidden cameras and sound recording devices to the general public. Tiny cameras that can be hidden in smoke detectors, radios, stereos, and even books and stuffed toys are especially popular. They are sold legally for use in homes and workplaces, but the question arises as to whether they are then used legally. Laws about using cameras on job sites vary between states, and many people question the ethics as well as legality of filming employees and customers without their knowledge or consent. These concerns also apply to sound recording devices such as phone taps.
