ABSTRACT

In the early 1990s, the TWAIN Working Group was formed. Its members included representatives from both the software industry and the hardware industry. These members had to work together to provide a solution to this problem, combining diversity and unity. The group stated that its purpose was to produce a standard software protocol and application programming interface for communication between software applications and image acquisition devices. After many meetings, input from various sources, and using the best of products already available, TWAIN was developed. Now TWAIN is included with most scanners and is the industry standard.
