ABSTRACT

The van der Waals force and the electrostatic force discussed in Chapters 5 and 6, respectively, are the determining forces used to treat the s~ability of colloidal dispersions in the classic DL VO theory, which, as its name implies, was developed by Derjaguin, Landau, Verwey, and Overbeek independently. It was and still is a very useful theory in most cases of colloid science, although a structural force should be added in other cases such as dispersions containing very hydrophilic or hydrophobic particles.
