ABSTRACT

The purpose of this report is to discuss the experimental variables that affect the direct observation of ions due to noncovalent complexes by ESI-MS. Many other reviews of the subject have appeared in the literature [3,4,38-41 ]. Over 100 examples of noncovalent interactions studied by ESI-MS have been published. However, as we and others have found in the laboratory, the use of ESI in this endeavor is not without its share of complications and is not considered a "routine" experiment. Each biological and experimental system has its unique characteristics. Several examples of noncovalently bound complexes will be discussed that highlight some of these "features.''
