INTRODUCTION

To the ancient Chinese proverb "one picture is worth 10,000 words," we add "for good or for bad." A colorful, dramatic graph can have a far greater impact than an uninspiring table of numerical values, for as the famous statistician John Tukey said, graphs enable us to "notice what we should have seen in the first place." Graphs are an excellent statistical tool for presenting results in certain circumstances, especially to nonstatistical audiences, but the choice of presentation method is demanding, and we see too many misleading or incorrect graphic illustrations.
