ABSTRACT
You survey to know the general state of affairs: opinions, events, attitudes, intentions, ownership, habits, purchases, demographic characteristics, and so forth. Observation provides the basic data for a survey. You count cars passing an intersection, report about the condition of bridges, and ask questions of consumers, voters, and inhabitants. Surveys have a long history and their types and purposes are diverse.
