ABSTRACT

A special group of substances that are most dangerous for the biosphere consists of compounds that were specially produced for the suppression of living organisms. It includes war gases such as mustard gas (2,2' -dichlorodiethylsulfide), a widespread contaminant of water and soil. Because of its high toxicity, stability, low solubility, and volatility, it may be preserved for a long time (for several decades) in nature, exhibiting a negative effect on all the living organisms. There have been examples of injuries inflicted on humans by mustard gas residues 50 years after its entrapment in soil [1].
