ABSTRACT

Figure 1.1 graphically depicts the interactions between the decisive factors that affect the launching and success of a venture. We can use the diagram to illustrate the interactions in a typical problem facing our society today: the need to use alternate sources of energy and become less dependent on the crude oil sources outside the United States. Suppose that as a society we wish to manufacture a significant amount of a synthetic fuel from coal. Solution of the major technical and scientific problems is a necessary first step before any economic issues can be considered. What is the basic chemistry? What are the kinetic, thermodynamic, and transport factors affecting equipment design? What are the engineering process design problems? What materials of construction are needed? What processes have already been tested and demonstrated?
