Each cofactor expansion reduces the order of the determinant by one, so there are n determinants of order n - I to evaluate. By repeated application, the cofactors are eventually reduced to 3 x 3 determinants which can be evaluated by the diagonal method. The amount of work can be reduced by choosing the expansion row or column with as many zeros as possible.
