ABSTRACT

Although many applications use activated base metal catalysts (ABMC) as powders in slurry reactors, the use of fixed bed ABMC is gaining wider commercial interest and acceptance. The fixed bed approach allows for a continuous reaction that can be readily controlled by the reaction conditions as well as the physical and chemical properties of the catalyst. Degussa-Huels 's Metalyst™ delivers the advantages of an ABMC while offering the flexibility one needs to take full advantage of their fixed bed catalytic system. Tills paper describes how the catalytic performance of Metalyst™ for the hydrogenation of nitrobenzene, glucose, acetone, and furfural is effected by parameters such as its activation depth, the structure of the preactivated alloy, its chemical composition, and bulk density.
