ABSTRACT
The main defects of the Riemann integral are its restriction to bounded integrands and its feeble convergence properties. The Lebesgue integral was introduced as a remedy for these particular defects. Its development led to measure theory and integration on measure spaces with a multitude of applications in classical analysis, functional analysis, and probability the ory.
