ABSTRACT

To demonstrate the use of the Robbins chart, we consider the separations of a paraffin from benzene, an aromatic compound. Benzene falls into group 11 on the Robbins chart, while the paraffin selected, heptane, falls into group 12. From the Robbins chart we see that group 8 (primary amines, ammonia, and unsubstituted amides) will give a negative deviation from Raoults law with the aromatic solute and a positive deviation with the paraffin.
