ABSTRACT
In the estimation of physical properties, there are two basic problems: a forward problem and a backward problem. The forward problem involves the calcula tion of macroscopic properties, given the molecular structure. The backward problem is the reverse thereof. It involves the construction of an appropriate molecular structure, given the desired macroscopic properties. Computer-aided molecular design (CAMD) is concerned with solving the backward problem.
