ABSTRACT

The objective of this chapter is to review the different categories of development strategies promoted in the region over the last decades, evaluate their development impact, analyze their limitations, and identify the core development challenges that need to be addressed in policy making. Accordingly, the first section presents the major categories of development strategies in Africa. This will be followed by the performance of the national economies in general and the industrial sector in particular. The

the African experience in economic integration has so far produced very limited results. Progress is scanty in the areas of production, infrastructure and other elements that could sustain development efforts. The institutional framework for integration is faced with several difficulties that are far from being resolved. In addition to the lack of funds for their implementation, integration programs and schemes are so discordant from one subregion to another that they give rise to hopeless situations. All actors are not allowed to participate in the integration process, which is seen so far as an affair of governments.
