ABSTRACT

The end of the Cold War and the growing "globalization" of the world economy has done little for Africa: ethnic rivalries continue to flare around the continent, taken even to the extremes of genocide, as in Rwanda and Burundi; wars continue to erupt; and HIV/AIDS continues to ravage the continent. The images of Africa that Europeans and Americans see are images of starvation, sickness, and slaughter, reinforcing their basic prejudices. This has gone on far too long. It cannot be allowed to continue.
