RESOURCES FOR REVIEWING THE LITERATURE Researchers often write the literature review even before the introduction, because only by a thorough review of the literature is it possible to put the research question in proper context. Readers will expect the researcher to relate classic studies to his or her subject, know what other research has already been done for each relationship in the researcher's model, and show awareness of the work of experts in the subfield. The researcher should be sure that professional journals related to the research subject are identified and have been examined to identify relevant studies. Even if there is little other research bearing on the research model, the researcher will want to discuss the two or three most-related studies, if only to highlight that a gap in the literature exists and that the researcher's proposal is, indeed, innovative.
