ABSTRACT
The exploratory panel is the first step in the competency identification process. It must be followed by the remaining steps of the validation process for the competencies to be considered scientifically valid. Benchmarkers report that a tendency is for organizations to conduct the competency identification process in a brain storming or committee atmosphere and then to consider their efforts complete. There are dangers associated with such an approach.
